Motivational Enhancement Therapy

If you are looking into treatment for drug or alcohol addiction or mental health problems, there are a number of different forms of evidence-based therapy and treatment options. One common form of therapy used in these situations is motivational enhancement therapy or MET.

Let’s take a closer look at what this therapy actually is and how it can help you.

What is Motivational Enhancement Therapy?

Motivational enhancement therapy, or MET, is a form of counseling in which the clinician works to help clients resolve their reluctance about engaging in drug treatment or stopping their substance abuse.

During motivational enhancement therapy, motivational interviewing principles are used to work to strengthen motivation and start working toward creating a plan for change. From there coping strategies are discussed and created with the client to help them avoid relapse. In some cases, clients are encouraged to bring a significant other to the session.

This type of treatment works to evoke a rapid change in a client’s motivation rather than walk them through the steps of a recovery process. While motivational enhancement therapy is an evidence-based treatment method, there is some evidence that shows that this form of treatment is more effective for some types of addictions than others. For example, this approach has been shown to be effective in helping those with alcohol use disorder engage more in the treatment process and reduce their problem drinking as well.
